Do you know how much artificial grass has advanced over the years? It has been around for much longer than you may think! In today’s blog we’re going to take a look at the history of artificial grass over the years and the advancements to make it as brilliant as it is today!
You may already know that artificial grass is used in a variety of different applications including a heavy usage in sports and that’s exactly where it commenced…
It all started somewhat 50 years ago at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, the world’s first multi-purpose domed sports stadium. Where artificial grass or ‘AstroTurf’ was used for the sports surface. It was installed specifically for Major League Baseball. Since then, it has become a widely recognised term for describing all types of artificial grass regardless of their application.
During the next 10 years, artificial grass became more widespread spreading all over the US and Canada predominantly for sports facilities. This spread to American Football when artificial grass was used by the Philadelphia Eagles. Over the years more national teams opted for the low maintenance artificial grass surface as a replacement for their natural grass.
Artificial grass came to Europe in the 70’s with a slightly different carpet made from polypropylene rather than nylon which was more commonly used in other countries.
It wasn’t till more recently, the 1990’s in fact, that artificial grass spread to landscaping areas and homeowners started to install these in their own homes. After that the commercial side opened up and as businesses were competing on a large scale, they opted for logo mats and bespoke surfaces to promote their brands.
